Correlation between urinary tract infection and reproductive performance of sows R. Bras. Zootec.
Moura,Rafael de; Caldara,Fabiana Ribeiro; Foppa,Luciana; Machado,Simone Pereira; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Garcia,Rodrigo Garófallo; Gonçalves,Liliane Maria Piano.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the prevalence and influence of urinary tract infection on the reproductive performance of sows. The animals underwent urine tests using reagent strips and diagnosed as positive or negative. They were then divided into two groups of 30 positive and 30 negative sows for urinary tract infection. Each sow was considered an experimental unit and was followed from labor to weaning. The animals were assessed for their reproductive performance (labor duration, number of live births, mummified piglets, and stillbirths, and postpartum diseases). After weaning, the weaning-estrus interval and rate of return to estrus were assessed. A thermographic camera was used to identify hyperthermia of the mammary system and its relation with...

C-reactive protein in acute coronary syndrome: association with 3-year outcomes BJMBR
Schaan,B.D.; Pellanda,L.C.; Maciel,P.T.; Duarte,E.R.; Portal,V.L..
Inflammatory markers have been associated with clinical outcome in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The present study evaluated the role of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) measurements as a predictor of late cardiovascular outcomes after ACS. One hundred and ninety-nine ACS patients in a Coronary Care Unit from March to November 2002 were included and were reassessed clinically after ~3 years. Clinical variables and CRP levels were evaluated as predictors of major cardiovascular events (MACE, defined as the occurrence of cardiac death, ischemic stroke or myocardial infarction) and mortality. Statistical analyses included Cox multivariable analysis and survival curves (Kaplan-Meier). Of the 199 patients, 11 died within 1 month (5.5%)....

Growth parameters based on age assignation, length-weight relationship and mortality rates of castañeta Cheilodactylus bergi were studied. Samples came from landings at Mar del Plata Port(Buenos Aires province, Argentina) during 1989, and from a research cruise carried out in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone(CFZ) during 1991. Castañeta is a longeval demersal species. The growth parameters of von Bertalanffy special model were: 1) Lý 31.95,34.69, 32,30; 2) K 040, 033, 039; and 3) t0 0.00, -0.16, 0.03 corresponding to males, females and all fish respectively. The rates of total mortality (Z) were 0.18, 0.16 and 0.17 for males, females and all fish, respectively. Because of the low rate of exploitation during the study, this values can be used as...

Haure, Joel; Baud, Jean-pierre.
A study on mortalities, growth and fattening of the oyster Crassostrea gigas was carried out spring with the autumn 1987 in four sites of bay of Bourgneuf. Mortalities, more important in spring, prove to be higher in the sectors North compared to the Southern sectors of bay of Bourgneuf. The performances of growth are rather weak when they are compared with other French oyster sectors. They however present a better production in the cattle-breeding areas located at the South of bay. The spring phase is marked by the formation of glucidic reserves, at the moment of the reheating of water, which is quickly transformed, in the majority of the sites, in lipids of reserves of the ovocytes, during the gamétogenèse. The state of fattening of Crassostrea gigas...

Trut, Gilles; Robert, Rene; Laborde, Jean-louis.
Until 1960, the Black scallop Chlamys varia was relatively abundant along the French Atlantic coasts. Today most of these natural beds have disappeared. Because mollusc hatchery and nursery techniques have been mastered, the reintroduction of this species, under control, was carried out in several areas and particularly in the bay of Arcachon, from 1989 to 1992. Good results were obtained in hatchery and nursery but the development of the juveniles in the natural fields was poor. The growth of Chlamys varia was satisfactory but heavy mortalities were rapidly recorded which could not be related to the hydrobiological conditions. This species seems to be very sensitive to short emersion and removal operations which are incompatible with aquaculture processes.

Cyst infection in hospital-admitted autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease patients is predominantly multifocal and associated with kidney and liver volume BJMBR
Balbo,B.E.P.; Sapienza,M.T.; Ono,C.R.; Jayanthi,S.K.; Dettoni,J.B.; Castro,I.; Onuchic,L.F..
Positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has improved cyst infection (CI) management in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The determinants of kidney and/or liver involvement, however, remain uncertain. In this study, we evaluated clinical and imaging factors associated with CI in kidney (KCI) and liver (LCI) in ADPKD. A retrospective cohort study was performed in hospital-admitted ADPKD patients with suspected CI. Clinical, imaging and surgical data were analyzed. Features of infected cysts were evaluated by PET/CT. Total kidney (TKV) and liver (TLV) volumes were measured by CT-derived multiplanar reconstruction. CI was detected in 18 patients who experienced 24 episodes during an interval of 30 months (LCI in 12, KCI...

DAIRY HERD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOCUSING ON PREWEANED HEIFERS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
The National Dairy Heifer Evaluation Project ( NDHEP ) was conducted by the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS ) from April 1991 through July 1992 with the assistance of 1,811 producers from 28 states. Producers included in the study each had herds of 30 or more milk cows, representing 78 percent of the milk cows in the U.S. The average total of cattle and calves on each operation was 169.4. The main breed on 94.9% of operations was Holstein. Slightly over 46 percent of operations stated reproductive problems as the cause of low milk production of cows culled from the herd. Newborn calves were separated from their mothers before nursing on 28.0 percent of operations and less than 12 hours after birth on 39.6 percent of operations. On 64.0...

Dangerous neighborhood: saurophagy between syntopic Tropidurus lizards Biota Neotropica
Passos,Daniel Cunha; Monteiro,Felipe Augusto Correia; Nogueira,Carlos Henrique de Oliveira.
Saurophagy constitutes an important source of mortality among lizards and has been reported for the genus Tropidurus. However, the extension of this behavior remains unknown. Herein, we record the predation of T. jaguaribanus by its congener T. hispidus. This is the first report of saurophagy among different species of syntopicTropidurus. Furthermore, whereas published records of saurophagy tend to be directed against juveniles, this case involved two adult individuals.

Gentil, Claire.
In many exploited species, we see a decrease of size-at-ages. Two main hypotheses have been proposed to explain this decline: a decline in growth and the selective mortality of the individuals with fast growth both being due to environmental changes or/and to fishing. The sardine Sardina pilchardus of the Bay of Biscay is a good model for the study of this phenomenon because of its high sensitivity to the environmental variations and it sustains two large French and Spanish fisheries. The aim of this study is to measure the changes in the growth of sardines, by the reading of otoliths, and to understand mechanisms involved in this process. The main stages of this study are described in this report: extraction of otoliths during PELGAS, otoliths...

Background: Microcell parasites are small intracellular protozoans mostly detected in molluscs and can be associated with mortalities. In 2010 and 2011, strong increases in mortality events were reported in different wild beds of the wedge clam Donax trunculus Linnaeus, along the Atlantic coast of France and the presence of potential pathogens, including microcells, was investigated. Methods: Clams collected in different beds showing mortality were examined by histology. Based on histological observations, confirmatory analyses were carried out, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and molecular characterization. Results: Histological analyses revealed the presence of small protozoans similar to microcell parasites in different tissues of Donax...

OceanDocs
Hansen, J.E..
Two pelagic cruises were carried out by R/V"Cap.Oca Balda" in the spring of 1988 and the following summer. Anchovy samples were taken in order to increase the knowledge on the differences between two main stocks of the species, inhabiting the Argentine Sea from 35°S southwards, with distributional boundary situated at about 41°S. Length-weight relationships were statistically different among populations. Weight-at-length values calculated for the summer cruise were higher tha sprin estimates, and they were also higher within Northern individuals. The differences were not statistically significant between stocks, but there are reasons to believe that if ages 1 and 6 of both stocks had been represented those differences would have been increased. Mortality...

Bras. Zool.
Santos Filho,Leocy C. dos; Batista,Vandick da S..
The matrinxã, Brycon amazonicus (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) is one of the most important fishery resources of the Amazonas state. Its population dynamics in Central Amazon was analyzed based on total landing and biometry data registered in the main landing port of Manaus, between 1994 and 2002. Growth and mortality rates were estimated separately for the rivers Purus, Madeira and Solimões. Differences in size structure and growth curves suggest that different population units exist among these rivers, requiring individualized evaluation and fisheries management strategies. The analysis of the yield per recruit does not indicate overexploitation. However, the highest relative exploitation rate was observed in the Madeira river. The suggested management...

Three mollusc species are cultured commercially in Australian tropical and warm temperate waters: the Sydney rock oyster Saccostrea commercialis , the pearl rock oyster is susceptible to two protozoans: Marteilia sydneyi , which is the cause of QX Disease and infects oysters during the summer; and Mikrocytos roughleyi which is associated with winter mortality. It also harbours mudworm, Polydora websteri a parasite farmers try to avoid by growing oysters on racks. Transported pearl oysters Pinctada maxima die with heavy infections of Vibrio harveyi . Cultured giant clams Tridacna gigas are pestered by pyramidellid snails and some carry Perkinsus sp., a protozoan common in reef bivalves.
